Household, moving and living area
Keep square metres, hectares, acres and square feet cleanly apart so that area figures from different countries become comparable.
Working steps
- Establish the source unit: m², ha, a, acre, ft² or mi².
- Distinguish hectares and ares for land — 1 ha is 100 a.
- Convert acre or ft² to square metres first for Anglo-American figures.
- Never convert areas through a length factor: areas scale quadratically.
- For living space also check whether usable area, living area or footprint is meant.
Checks
- 1 hectare equals 10000 m² or 100 ares.
- 1 acre equals 4046.8564224 m².
- A length factor is not an area factor: 2× length yields 4× area.
